Best Attic Insulation Options for Chattanooga Homes

Spray foam, blown cellulose, or batts? Here's how each performs in Chattanooga's humid Climate Zone 4A and which one we recommend most.

The best attic insulation for a Chattanooga home depends on whether you have ductwork up there, how much headroom there is, and your budget. For most homes, the answer is one of three: spray foam at the roof deck, blown cellulose on the attic floor, or a hybrid.

Option 1: Spray Foam at the Roof Deck

Open cell spray foam at 5-7 inches creates a conditioned attic. This is the right call when you have HVAC equipment or ductwork in the attic. It eliminates 30-40% of energy loss from leaky duct boots and stops the 140°F summer attic that radiates heat into bedrooms.

Option 2: Blown Cellulose on the Attic Floor

The most cost-effective option for homes with no equipment in the attic. We air seal the ceiling plane first, then blow R-49 of dense-pack cellulose. Comfort and bill changes are noticeable within the first month.

Option 3: Hybrid (Closed Cell + Blown-In)

A thin layer of closed cell foam at the roof deck for air sealing, topped with blown cellulose for R-value. Excellent performance, lower cost than full spray foam.

Recommended R-Value

Chattanooga sits in DOE Climate Zone 4A. Recommended attic R-value is R-38 to R-60. Most pre-2000 homes have R-19 to R-25 — well below modern recommendations.
