Best Attic Insulation for Tennessee Homes

The Department of Energy recommends R-38 to R-60 for our climate zone. Most Chattanooga attics are nowhere close.

Chattanooga is in DOE Climate Zone 4. The recommended attic R-value is R-38 to R-60. Most homes built before 2000 are sitting at R-19 to R-25.

Material Choices

Blown cellulose is the most cost-effective. Spray foam at the roofline is the highest performance. Fiberglass batts work but only if installed perfectly — gaps wreck performance.

Don't Skip Air Sealing

Adding more insulation over leaky ceilings is wasted money. Air seal first — top plates, recessed lights, plumbing chases, attic hatches — then insulate.
